Whiter Smiles On Your Wedding Day
There is so much to think of when planning a wedding, the church, the minister, the flowers, cars, caterers…. The list is endless
But what about what will no doubt be your most treasured memories of your wedding- without doubt your photographs! Over the years you will no doubt look back at these pictures and laugh, cry and reminisce about your big day.
But how will you look in your wedding photographs? You have the dress of your dreams, the groom his suit, your hair looks amazing and your makeup perfect… but how bright is your smile? Do your teeth look less than dazzling white??
Have the years of drinking coffee, red wine and maybe smoking left your teeth looking yellow and dull.
Consider Teeth Whitening
One of the most popular cosmetic procedures, teeth whitening has been around for nearly 20 years and is the most commonly performed and easiest cosmetic procedure carried out anywhere in the world.
Professional dental surgeons offer this service along with beauty salons and other high street stores, process vary and can range upwards from $400.00, with some of the top dentists charging in excess of $900.00 for a course of whitening treatment.
How Do Dentists Whiten Our Teeth
The most common way to get whiter teeth is by the application of a whitening or bleaching gel; most dentists use a gel called Carbamide Peroxide. This is applied to the teeth by fitting special trays over the teeth that hold the gel and allow the teeth to ‘sit in the gel’ for periods ranging from 30 to 120 minutes. They may sometimes shine a special bright blue light into our mouths which has the effect of speeding the action of the gel.
Carbamide whitening gels can vary in strengths from around 10% concentration right through to those in excess of 35%. The FDA has raised concerns over high strength gels as reports have shown that they could cause teeth and gum sensitivity in some cases.
The FDA in fact recommend 16% as the best strength.
We would recommend that you certainly avoid gels that are over 22% and would suggest 16% as the optimum choice.
Can I Do It At Home
Especially during the run up to a wedding with all the cost associated with it, the cost of having teeth whitened in a surgery can prove to be excessive and beyond the reach of many people. The development of home teeth whitening kits over the past 15 years has brought the cost of this treatment right down and within reach of anybody who wants to make their smile whiter.
What Do I Look For In A Home Teeth Whitening Kit
First and foremost the gel, it is singularly the most important part of the kit, make sure it is Carbamide peroxide and check out the gel strengths. Unless you have particularly sensitive teeth, choose a gel between 14 and 22% strength, these are unlikely to cause any of the irritation that stronger gels are known for and are plenty strong enough to effectively whiten your teeth by up to 11 shades of white.
Most kits these days supply customisable teeth application trays, along with full instructions…some supply an optional blue light assembly that will speed the whitening process. Also check out the amount of gel that you are getting with the kit, how many treatments do you get for your money?.
